In Russia Gypsy songs are well known. Their melodies evoke romantic images: vast fields, grazing horses, smoking fires, tents, carts…— freedom! Such a sweet word to the Russian soul!

In Russia people have never had enough freedom. Gypsies remind people that it was possible to be independent from the authorities and the government. That is why peasants who had been suppressed by their masters, noblemen overburdened with polite mannerisms and civil servants bounded by formalities liked Gypsy concerts so much. Russian society has admired the songs of the “constant pilgrims” for two centuries. Dance melodies became a symbol of gaiety; songs filled their hearts with sweet sadness.

People think they know what Gypsy songs are, but they are wrong. When Gypsy bands come to international festivals, people first praise them for their talent, and then ask:

— Why do you sing Russian songs? Don’t forget that you are Roma!

Our folklore turns out to sound like Gypsy music only to a Russian audience. Foreigners who don’t understand all the nuances of our culture primarily hear Russian tunes in this music.

Thus, in different countries knowledge about Gypsies differs. For example, most people can’t tell Gypsy flamenco from the Spanish variety. One has to grow up in Spain to fill the difference. It is easy to mistake for Hungarian, Serbian or Bulgarian music songs which are considered to be Gypsy in those countries. This is why any good Gypsy festival becomes a thrilling trip through European folklore.

In this section different performance styles are explained. Of cause we mainly talk about Ruska Roma’s folklore. But we are sure you will be interested in the work of other Gypsy groups.
