Paintings With Roma

In this section, paintings are shown. Artists of many different eras eagerly depicted Gypsy musicians. You will see paintings and graphics created in Russia, Austria, Hungary, Spain and other countries.

In every country painting shows features that are typical of local Gypsies. Passionate flamenco dances and virtuosic guitarists were depicted by Spanish artists. When looking at the pictures it is possible to “hear” cheering cries and hands clapping rhythmically.

Hungarian and Austrian artists concentrated on violinists. In this region Gypsy violin music became extremely popular, and even gained Gypsies a certain privilege.

Could European artists perfectly capture the theme of dance? An olive-skinned girl with a tambourine became a favorite character all over Europe.

This collection presented by “Svenko” gives a general portrait of Gypsy actors who worked with an inner feeling of total freedom.
