Black Girl

new

The film Black Girl (Qaraca qız) was made by Azerbaijanfilm studio in 1966. That was a story of a little Azerbaijani girl, an orphan, brought up by a Gypsy tribe. There were Oleg Khabalov and Raya Udovikova, actors of the Romen theatre, among Gypsies in a picture. Udovikova danced in a scenic manner, waving a skirt, but barefoot, in a nomadic style. Too bad that Udovikova’s cinema career wasn’t successful in the USSR. She even lost a role of Masha in the film The Living Corpse after she had been chosen. The reason was political: Udovikova immigrated to a non-socialist European country, and the film director didn’t dare to work with her.

Aza, the Gypsy

new

1987. Dovzhenko film studio. The film director: Grigory Kohan.

The film had everything to be a hit. Excellent casting, beautiful picture, use of Ukrainian and Romani speech to the point. But the plot wasn’t good at all. Here is a dance fragment: a scene in an inn. We can see such stars as Lyalya the Pearl (Zhemchuzhnaya), Igor Krikunov, Serghey Erdenko. Dances are really good but performed in a scenic manner; it looks a little strange in an “ancient” inn.

Ghelena Velikanova Singing

new

A fragment from a musical film Ghelena Velikanova Singing. 1967. You can hear Novella Matveyeva’s song Merry Gypsies making play with a myth that Gypsies steal beautiful children. The plot of the song is quite simple: a little Moldavian girl has been stolen and brought up by nomadic Gypsies; once she has stolen a bearcub to have a pet and has trained him to do funny things. The fragment is interesting because of dancing Zemfira the Pearl (Zhemchuzhnaya). In spite of inconvenient shoes, Zemfira’s dance is unique and perky; but her shoes points up affected ambience of a “Gypsy camp” in a picture.

Hungarian Nabob

new

A film Hungarian Nabob (Egy Magyar nabob, 1968) was showed in Soviet cinemas, but without some fragments. A rich Hungarian nobleman carouses in an inn with Gypsy musicians and dancers. And after an all-night feast he pays a cost of the inn to its owners and burn it.

Romanies may have a real cultural shock watching the fragment. Impossible: short skirts, a naked breast… But most Hungarian Gypsies have a great influence of Hungarian people. They are much more loose, so the fragment is quite realistic.
